“There are over 1,000,000 images in the library’s circulating picture collection, which is located on the third floor of the library’s Mid-Manhattan branch. They’re pulled from books, magazines, newspapers, print photographs, prints, and postcards, and are filed according to a whopping 12,000 subject headings. This depth and specificity, says Billy, makes the collection incredibly valuable. In many cases the subject headings are divided further; Costume, for example, is divided or cross-listed by century, country, and type (Bathing, Bridal, etc.).”
